Former inmate turns his life around

Patrick Jones didn’t plan to end up in prison. But when he did, he knew it was time for a change. Davis Technical College’s Welding Technology program, taught at the prison, was the perfect path to a better future.
Patrick had never welded in his life, but he didn’t let that stop him. His instructor, Dexter Thayne, was patient with his struggles and frustrations, and Patrick appreciated learning multiple ways to do the same thing. He quickly learned how to weld, and became so proficient that he tutored other students. “Being able to put pieces of metal together…it’s really fascinating,” he says.
For those who struggle as he did, Patrick has a message. “Stop doing what you’re doing and go to school... Your best advantage is to go and enroll in those classes. There’s a lot of negativity: ‘Oh, it’s not going to help you. You’ve got this big mark on your past.’ Baloney. Don’t feed into that. Because it’s not true.”
